Johnstone Burgh boss Jamie McKim reckons his team produced their best performance of the season in Saturday’s eight-goal thriller with St Roch’s.

Brian Connor put the hosts ahead at Keanie Park with an accurate strike from the edge of the box after 10 minutes but the visitors responded through a Ben Daily goal midway through the first half.

Burgh were back in front in the 34th minute as Connor netted at the near post and, a minute later, Aaron Millar bagged his first of the afternoon with a drilled effort into the corner.

St Roch’s pulled a goal back through Kieran Daw from the penalty spot less than five minutes later but Millar rounded off the first-half scoring with a smart finish on 41 minutes.

After the break, Daw scored his second penalty of the afternoon before Burgh were awarded one of their own, which was converted by Jojo Gillespie to make the final score 5-3.

McKim was delighted with his team’s performance in difficult conditions on a tricky surface.

He told Gazette Sport: “It was the best we’ve been all season, in my eyes.

“To go into any game and score five goals and get three points, it’s hard to have anything negative to say.

“When they score their first goal, we’ve taken kick-off, retain the ball for 35 seconds and then score without them touching it, which was really good.

“It showed great character and the quality of our goals was really high.

“I was a wee bit upset with the manner of the goals we lost but overall we were fantastic, especially with the conditions the way they were.”

McKim has also been busy off the park as he has secured the signatures of Connor and Gillespie until the end of the 2023/24 campaign, as well as bringing in St Cadoc’s player Shaun Rodgers, who has signed an 18-month deal.

The Burgh boss is also keen to get new deals agreed for more of his current squad.

He added: “We’ve got one eye on next season because we’re at the stage where we need to look after ourselves and get players tied down early.

“We’ll hopefully have another couple committing their futures this week.”

Burgh are on the road this Saturday when they travel to the KG Stadium to take on Blantyre Victoria, with kick-off at 2pm.
