Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim admits it will take time for his new-look squad to gel.

The Keanie Park side have targeted promotion from the First Division of the West of Scotland Football League, having signed former Scotland star Graham Dorrans, as well as the likes of Arthurlie hitman Dale Simeon and highly-rated Pollok duo Del Esplin and Stuart McCann.

Burgh returned to action at the weekend as they hosted the JW Grant Tournament, which also involved Glenvale, Largs Thistle and Maryhill.

McKim’s men were beaten 5-0 by Largs on Saturday, whilst Maryhill edged past Glenvale to book their spot in Sunday’s final.

Burgh were 6-0 winners over Glenvale on Sunday, with Largs lifting the trophy after a 2-0 victory against Maryhill.

McKim had mixed feelings about his team's efforts but insists he isn’t reading too much into results at this stage.

He told Gazette Sport: “You need to put it into perspective when you have a weekend like that. I’m not going to get overly excited about Sunday’s result and I’m not going to get too despondent over Saturday’s either.

“Saturday was obviously a disappointing result and it’s not something I would expect from us. I think, with the way we have recruited, it’s not something that will be a feature of the season.

“Largs scored a great free-kick in the first half and then they were really disciplined and held their shape but we dominated the ball and created more chances and, for me, were the better side.

“In the second half, they scored their second goal and we fell out of the game and I think, at that point, you could see we aren’t quite yet a team, we’re still a bunch of individuals trying to gel and come together and become a team.

“Some of the goals we gave away were criminal and I’m not saying I’m glad they happened but they won’t be accepted during the season."

McKim said he has been able to take positives and negatives from the weekend fixtures and described the tournament as "a good exercise."

He added: “We’ve got a plan in place for how we want to play and defend and attack but it’s not going to happen overnight.”

Burgh face Thorn Athletic on Tuesday evening, with kick-off at 7.30pm, before Premier Division side Hurlford United visit Keanie Park on Saturday, with that match getting underway at 2pm.
