Johnstone Burgh boss Jamie McKim admits his players only have themselves to blame for missing out on victory against Whitletts Victoria on Saturday.

The Keanie Park team were missing several players, including injured hitman Kyle Lafferty, at Dam Park but took an early lead through a Ryan Wallace header.

Burgh then missed a number of chances before Robbie McCracken and Thomas Dempsie scored for Whitletts to put them ahead.

Things looked bleak when the visitors were reduced to 10 men as Cammy Crooks was sent off but they grabbed a point in added time when Kieran Brophy slid the ball home from close range.

It means Burgh remain unbeaten this season but McKim knows his team needs to be more clinical in the final third.

He told Gazette Sport: “It was really frustrating because we had enough chances over the course of the game to take all three points.

“In the end we got what we deserved because, if you don’t take your chances when you’re on top, you always leave the opportunity for the opposition to come back in.

“Kyle Lafferty was out injured, Dylan Fletcher’s partner went into labour and we’re also missing Dale Simeon, Dom Boland and Stuart McCann but the squad I’ve built is there to cope with situations like this.

"We created enough, we just didn’t take the chances.”

Burgh had gone into the game on a high, after defeating fellow promotion candidates Drumchapel United last Wednesday night.

Ross McKenzie and Brophy were on target for the home team in the 2-1 win at Keanie Park but McKim insists he isn’t reading too much into the result.

He added: “I thought the timing of the Drumchapel game would suit them more than us because we're still getting to know each other, whereas they're already a top team and only made five or six signings.

“The way we played and the result on Wednesday was brilliant but nothing was won or lost then.

“It laid a marker and was a positive result. The only disappointment was that we couldn’t build on that on Saturday.”

This weekend, Burgh take on the only team currently ahead of them in the First Division table as Shotts Bon Accord visit Keanie Park.

The Ayrshire side have nine points from nine after victories over Kilbirnie Ladeside, Ashfield and Neilston and McKim is grateful not to be in midweek action again ahead of that match.

He said: “Going Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday can see wee knocks turn into injuries and it’s hard on the legs. I’m hoping, with the full week to recover, we will have everyone available.

“With the squad we’ve got, we should be ready to go and beat Shotts. They are a good team and will cause us problems but we have the players to go and dominate the game.”

Kick-off at Keanie Park on Saturday is at 2pm.
