Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim admits his side got what they deserved as their recent run of cup success came to an end against Largs Thistle on Saturday.

A 2-0 defeat Barrfields saw the Keanie Park side crash out of the West of Scotland Football League Cup at the second round stage and brings their streak of six consecutive victories in three different cup competitions to an end.

Goals in either half from Craig Forbes and Lewis Davidson secured the Premier Division outfit’s name in the hat for round three, whilst McKim doesn’t believe the loss will set back his troops too much.

Speaking to Gazette Sport, he said: “It was a poor game with very few chances but I think the better team won.

“We had to make a few changes so it was hard for the boys to settle quickly and they have capitalised on it with an early goal and from there it was difficult.

“It was an off day that we haven’t had too many of recently so we’ll address it and look at it and move on going into the next week.   I think our character is there and we’ll have a positive reaction this weekend. I’m looking forward to Saturday and the boys are as well.

“With the progress we have made in recent seasons then you go into every game expecting to do well so it’s disappointing to lose, the feeling is hard to take, but you need to reflect on the last seven or eight weeks and look at how well we have done.

“We’re still such a new team but the progress is there for everyone to see and we just want to continue that.”

Despite their journey in one competition coming to an end, Burgh could move into the last eight of the Scottish Junior Cup with a win over Dundee Downfield on Saturday.

The Johnstone club have had their fair share of victories over teams from the east in recent seasons and McKim hopes to add another to the tally this weekend.

He said: “There is a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs and that would be the furthest we’ve been in the tournament in my time at the club.

“I don’t think the result on Saturday puts us back in any way, we just need to get back in and work hard.

“The contacts from that area are brilliant after all the games we’ve played against teams from there recently!

“We’ve had video footage which has been good – I’d always rather see an opponent in the flesh but it’s not always possible. We’ll be ready.”

Kick-off at Keanie Park on Saturday is at 1.30pm.
