Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim reckons making it to the semi-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup is "massive" for the club.

It was an afternoon of high drama at Keanie Park on Saturday as McKim's men fought back from 2-0 down against St Cadoc's to find themselves 3-2 up, only to then concede an equaliser late on.

That meant the quarter-final clash went to penalties, with Burgh winning the shootout 4-1.

It had been a nightmare start for the hosts, with goals from Richie McKillen and Neil McLaughlin putting the Premier Division title challengers in control.

Burgh hit back, however, with Kieran Brophy halving the deficit and Ross McKenzie bringing them level before the break.

Skipper Jason Naismith put the home team in front for the first time midway through the second period but a late spot-kick from Gary Muir made it 3-3.

Burgh then produced the perfect shootout, with Graham Dorrans, Gary McCann, Ally Small and Hamish McKinlay all successful and goalkeeper Harry Broun doing his bit with one save.

McKim told Gazette Sport: “For the club, it’s massive. We haven’t been at this stage of the competition for more than 20 years.

“We done it with a real makeshift squad and it just goes to show the strength and depth and what the dressing room is all about.

“It shows you what the boys are all about, not just in a football sense but as people, because they really got stuck in.

“We didn’t start the game well and gave away goals that aren’t like us, so it would have been easy to accept they are beaten and put the tools away but they were brilliant after that.

“Being 2-0 down against a top side from the league above is difficult but the guys showed what they were about.”

Burgh return to league duty this Saturday with a trip to Kilbirnie Ladeside, who are riding high after a thumping 5-0 win at promotion-chasing Rutherglen Glencairn.

Kilbirnie have pulled themselves away from danger by finding the net 22 times in their last six outings and McKim is well aware of the threat they pose.

He said: “My scout was at Rutherglen on Saturday and he said Kilbirnie were fantastic but we’ve got an idea of what they can do to hurt us.

“They’ve got quality in their team and they are in good form, so it’s going to be really tough.”

Kick-off at Valefield Park is at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Renfrew boss Jimmy Quigley has hinted that supporters may see more of the club's cup-winning youngsters in the near future.

The development side lifted the PlayerData League Cup at Broadwood at the end of last month after a penalty shootout victory over Darvel.

Quigley hasn’t been afraid to play his young guns in the first team this season and is keen to make the most of the exciting options he has at his disposal.

He told Gazette Sport: “They were great in the cup final and, in the conditions, they defended really well.

“A few of them have been involved this season and there’s others we’ll introduce into training over the next couple of months.

“Some of them still have another year at that level but some will be too old, so we’ll get them in at the end of the season and have a look at them and take it from there.”
