POLICE investigating a rape near an Elderslie primary school have said they are “working tirelessly” in a bid to snare the sex beast.

Extensive inquiries continue to be carried out by a dedicated team of officers following the frightening attack, which took place on a path between Byres Road and Glenmalloch Place on Monday, February 20.

The 27-year-old victim was approached from behind by the rapist, who struck her, causing her to fall over, before subjecting her to a serious sexual assault.

Officers leading the investigation have issued a fresh appeal for information as they believe the key to catching the pervert lies within the local community.

Detective Inspector Louise Harvie told The Gazette: “The man responsible for this attack has not yet been identified and, as such, this enquiry remains a priority.

“I would like the public to know that a dedicated team is working tirelessly on this enquiry and all information provided will be assessed and then acted upon.

“If you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant you think it might be, let us determine that, as it could prove vital to our investigation.”

The attack took place at around 8pm, near to Wallace Primary, and police have visited the school to reassure staff and pupils.

Officers have also been searching for the victim’s trousers, which were removed by the rapist, who is described as white, between 35 and 50 years of age and of medium to stocky build, with dark hair that is receding on top.

At the time, he was wearing dark trousers and a light-coloured t-shirt.

Det Insp Harvie said she has been encouraged by the response from the public, who have supplied some “important” information.

She added: “I’d ask everyone reading this to cast their minds back to the evening of February 20 and the days that followed and ask themselves if anyone they know was acting out of character.

“The woman’s trousers are still missing and I would ask residents in Elderslie that, if they come across any trousers which don’t belong to them in their bin or garden, they should contact us immediately.

“In addition, it is believed the suspect may have sustained a facial injury as a result of the attack, so I would urge people to think back to the evening of February 20. Did they see anyone matching the description with a facial injury near to the area?”

Anyone who has information about the attack is asked to call the police on 101.
