A NEW group of Syrian refugees have arrived in Renfrewshire.
More than 200 men, women and children fleeing the war-torn country touched down at Glasgow Airport on a charter flight last week as part of the UK government’s Vulnerable Persons Resettlement (VPR) scheme.
They have been taken into the care of Renfrewshire Council and other local authorities, including Argyll and Bute, Dundee, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire.
The latest arrivals mean Renfrewshire has now welcomed more than 100 refugees under the VPR scheme.
Mark Macmillan, leader of Renfrewshire Council, said: “Renfrewshire has a strong track record in welcoming and integrating families fleeing from war in Syria.
“The people who are already here have settled in well and are building new lives.
“There continues to be a strong partnership approach in place to help families who have just arrived here.
“That effort has been helped by the kindness and support of individuals and community organisations and I know that will continue over the coming months.”
Hundreds of flights carrying Syrian refugees have arrived in the UK over the past 18 months. Around one-fifth of the 5,500 Syrian refugees resettled in the UK so far have been found homes in Scotland.
