A POPULAR theatre group is set to be the toast of the town as it stages its latest show.

Audiences can enjoy Whisky Galore: A Musical, courtesy of the Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group.

The show is based on the book by Compton MacKenzie about the events of the SS Politician running aground off Eriskay, in the outer Hebrides, in the 1930s.

People from across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire are expected to head to Johnstone Town Hall for the production, which runs from Wednesday, April 26, until Saturday, April 29.

Johnstone Phoenix spokesman Iain Usher said: “Rehearsals are well under way for this production, which is sizing up to be quite the event.

“In act one, audiences will thoroughly enjoy the build up to, and the arrival of, the cargo of whisky on the stricken ship, and then the second act which is devoted to the drinking of it, the hiding of it, and the disposal of it.

“The story is very topical at the moment, due to the 75th anniversary of the SS Politician’s sinking and the remake of the film starring Eddie Izzard, Gregor Fisher, John Sessions and James Cosmo, which has been earmarked for a cinema release on May 5.”

Performances of Whisky Galore: A Musical will be staged at 7.30pm each night and there will also be a Saturday matinee at 2pm.

Tickets cost £13 for adults and £10 for concessions.
