The SNP are celebrating after becoming the largest party on Renfrewshire Council - but it has been a bittersweet day for the Nationalists as they failed to gain an overall majority.

With the results in each of Renfrewshire's wards now declared, it has emerged that no single party has enough councillors to form an administration on its own.

That will mean talks between the parties in the coming days in a bid to thrash out a power-sharing deal.

Previously, a Labour administration controlled the council.

Voters returned a total of 19 SNP councillors when they went to the polls yesterday, with 13 Labour councillors elected.

It was a good day for the Conservatives, who went from having one councillor to eight.

Their success included having a councillor - John McIntyre - elected in the Paisley North-West ward, which includes the Ferguslie Park area - identified as the most deprived community in Scotland in a Scottish Government report issued last year.

It is believed to be the first time a Tory has been elected in the Ferguslie Park area.

Eileen McCartin remains the sole Liberal Democrat representative in Renfrewshire, while the remaining two seats in the council chambers will be occupied by Independent members Paul Mack and Andy Doig.

Councillor Mack was first elected in 1995, while Councillor Doig, who previously served as a SNP member, decided to stand as an Independent after a bitter split from the Nationalists earlier this year.

Following boundary changes, the number of councillors representing Renfrewshire has increased to 43.

At the 2012 elections, Labour won 22 of the 40 seats, with the SNP taking 15. The Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats won a solitary seat each, with Councillor Mack voted in as the only Independent.
