ONE of Scotland’s biggest film stars visited Renfrewshire in 2007 to meet a real-life hero.

Hollywood A-lister Ewan McGregor rode into Bishopton with pal Charley Boorman as part of an epic motorcycle adventure.

The stars, who made a programme called ‘Long Way Round’ to highlight their 20,000-mile motorcycle jaunt, popped into Erskine to meet brave veterans.

They chatted with 95-year-old Alex Lees, who survived the famous prisoner of war camp immortalised in the Steve McQueen movie The Great Escape.

Alex, who served with the Royal Army Service Corps during the Second World War, was held at Stalag Luft III, where he volunteered for gardening duties that allowed him to help prisoners dig tunnels in a bid to make their way to freedom.

He also swapped beds with one of the officers on the escape list.
