RENFREWSHIRE Council will be reminding all residents of high-rise flats of what to do in a fire following the blaze in Grenfell Tower, London.

Flames engulfed the 24-storey tower block in north Kensington earlier this week.

So far 17 people have been confirmed dead but the death toll is expected to rise above 100.

Following the disaster the council's director of housing Mary Crearie convened a meeting to discuss the safety of tenants in high-rise flats across Renfrewshire.

Cllr McGurk said the council will be working closely with the fire service following the incident.

She said: "I would like to provide reassurance to the residents of our multi-storey flats.

"Renfrewshire Council works closely with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to ensure the safety of occupants.

“Regular fire safety inspections are carried out and our housing concierge and caretakers regularly inspect each of the blocks to ensure that a range of fire safety measures are in place.

“All works on Renfrewshire high-rise housing blocks, including over-cladding, comply with Scottish Building regulations and materials used are designed to be fire retardant.

“We provide residents with up-to date advice on what to do in a fire and are writing to all residents to remind them of this."

There are 14 multi-storey flats in Renfrewshire.

If any resident has concerns they should call 0300 300 0222.
