AN arsonist set the pitches on fire at a Paisley school - damaging 25 feet of the astroturf grounds.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to Gleniffer High School in Paisley at 8.22pm on Sunday, June 18.

One fire appliance attended and firefighters extinguished a small fire on the astroturf.

No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Amey, who owns the pitches at the school said: "We can confirm that an area of the astroturf football pitches has been damaged by fire at Glennifer High School.

"The fire occurred on Sunday evening which the Scottish Fire and Rescue were able to contain, bringing the fire under control quickly and safely.

"Their quick response helped minimise the impact of the fire to a small area behind the goal.

"Our team is currently assessing the damaging and are working with the school and our supply chain to repair the area quickly."

The incident occurred outside normal school hours and the location of the affected area meant it had no impact on lessons or other activities.

The police have been informed and are investigating the incident.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, who is based at Paisley police office: "We understand that a young person was seen nearby during this incident.

"However, we are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at this time to come forward.
