Two decades of sporting history was celebrated at a family fun day in Johnstone.

People of all ages flocked to the McMaster Sports Centre to mark the 20th anniversary of local amateur football club Thorn Athletic.

A host of activities were on offer throughout the day, with a bouncy castle proving to be a particular hit with youngsters.

And there were plenty of snacks being served up to make sure no-one went hungry.

Organisers said there was a true community feel to the event as nearly 300 people, including local councillor John Hood, came along to show their support for the club.

On the pitch, players past and present lined up for some matches.
Youngsters from Thorn Athletic’s 2006s, 2007s and 2008s teams were among those given the chance to shine.

As well as the fun and games, the club was keen to highlight a serious issue as legends from Thorn Athletic’s past battled it out for the Breathing Space Cup – named after the charity which supports people with depression.

Club founder Mark McGee was delighted to have raised awareness for such an important cause.

He said: “We have just started to push the charity in the last few months or so and it’s a hugely important issue for us.

“Overall, the day went really well and we were so pleased to see such a good turnout.

“The weather was excellent, which helped to boost the numbers.

“It was great to showcase the club and to see all the kids having fun. It was also a pleasure to welcome back players from the 20 years of the club’s history.”
