A COMMUNITY radio station was making waves across Johnstone over the weekend after broadcasting live from its new digital studio.

The fun-filled afternoon on Saturday took place in the town’s High Street as Johnstone Sound aims to reach a wider audience.

Actor and musician Tom Urie cut a ribbon to officially open the radio station’s new hub, which is based in the offices of Alpha Taxis.

Alex Kerr, founder and chairman of Johnstone Sound, told The Gazette: “We now have a fantastic studio to broadcast from and there will be opportunities for school and community groups to get involved.

The Gazette:

“During the event, we had a chat live on air with Tom Urie, who is a brilliant and very down-to-earth guy.

“The donation of the office that we are now using is from Tam McGarrell, the owner of Alpha Taxis, which is our main sponsor.

“He has been very supportive from the very start in helping our station and we want to thank him for providing this space, as without him we wouldn’t have this studio.

“We would also like to thank Johnstone Carpets and local builders Williams and Hart, who built a soundproof wall for us, which is fantastic.”

The Gazette:

Bosses at the radio station, which launched in April 2019, are still keen to hear from potential new recruits who are interested in joining their team.

Alex said: “We have recently recruited three new presenters, which has been good.

“Right now, we are actively seeking someone who can work behind the scenes and help update our social media pages.

“We’ll always be looking for new people to join us and, now that we’ve got the studio, it means presenters don’t have to broadcast from their homes unless they prefer to.”
