Hundreds of people took part in a mass demonstration outside an Erskine hotel where asylum seekers are being housed.

The event, which took place at the Muthu Glasgow River Hotel on Sunday, was organised by members of Stand Up to Racism Scotland (SUTR) and the Scottish Trade Union Congress.

Local residents were joined by supporters who had travelled by coach from Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh, with placards such as 'Refugees welcome' and 'Support Erskine antiracists' on display.

The event included speeches from STUC general secretary Roz Foyer, Erskine residents, representatives from unions including UCU, EIS, NASUWT, FBU and Paisley Trades Council, representatives from faith groups such as the Catholic church and refugee rights campaigners, as well as a state from human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar.

The SUTR claimed that no members of the Homeland Party, a splinter group of Patriotic Alternative, were seen at Sunday's demonstration.

The two groups have previously held protests calling for the refugees to be removed from the Muthu Glasgow River Hotel.

A SUTR spokesperson said the Homeland Party wanted to "feed off the racist climate".

They added: "But continuous antifascist opposition wherever they raise their head has stopped them."
