Dodgy drivers who flout speed limits in Bridge of Weir are being targeted in a new police clampdown.

We previously reported how local residents were "living in fear" due to speeding traffic on Kilmacolm Road.

In an effort to reduce speeds through the village, a mobile speed camera van will regularly be stationed at the location from Monday, June 19.

The measure, also known as flexible deployment, follows a speed survey carried out last year, which found drivers were not sticking to the 30mph limit.

Police said recent dangerous driving in the village had resulted in four injury collisions, two of which involved pedestrians.

A plea for action in the area frequented by children, GP surgery patients and care home residents was also made last summer.

It came in the form of a petition, which was brought to Renfrewshire Council and warned if the situation was not addressed urgently it was only a matter of time before someone was killed on the road.

Alan Bowater, Safety Cameras Scotland unit manager for the west, told The Gazette: "The presence of the mobile enforcement van will help deter those drivers who refuse to reduce their speed through the village.

"We have already seen two serious injury collisions in the area involving vulnerable road users.

"This compounded with the high speeds justifies targeted enforcement in the area in order to support active travel and keep all road users safe.

"Those who refuse to reduce their speed will face a minimum three points on their licence and a £100 fine."
