We’re taking a look back at what was happening across Renfrewshire this time 10 years ago.

We delved into the Gazette archives from Wednesday, January 8, 2014, to find and share some photos from that week’s edition of the paper.

Do you recognise anyone or remember these stories?

The Gazette: Two Johnstone volunteers were named in the New Years Honours list.

Having spent the previous 20 years volunteering in social housing, grandmother Nanette Reid was to be presented with a British Empire Medal for her tireless work within the community.

Community activist Tommy Kelly, meanwhile, was left “speechless” after receiving a prestigious MBE award for his work with Johnstone Credit Union, which he helped launch in 1979.

The Gazette: Residents in Linwood won a four-year bid for a large piece of land to build new facilities for the community — including a football pitch and a community centre.

The long campaign to buy the 2.4 hectare piece of land had been described as an ‘uphill struggle’ by the Linwood Community Development Trust, who hoped to create a better future for residents.

The Gazette: Senior pupils held a European open day at Barsail Primary.

Parents and relatives paid a visit to the school to hear about the type of projects children have been educated about during the last term.

Representing different countries around the world — including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Spain and Greece — the youngsters showcased displays of their hard work throughout 2013.

The Gazette: Douglas Alexander met with staff at Morrisons in Johnstone who had been wearing Christmas jumpers in aid of charity.

The big-hearted workers at the supermarket store donned the festive clobber in a bid to raise money for Save the Children.

The Gazette: In a tremendous advert for SNL ice hockey, Paisley Pirates gave their fans the perfect festive end to 2013 with a thrilling win by the odd goal in 11 against a very good Solway team.

The Gazette: Renfrew moved out of the relegation zone for the first time in the season thanks to an impressive 4-1 win at Ashfield.

The victory was the ‘Frew’s second in as many games, however, co-manager Colin Clark still believed his side had more to offer.
