A FORMER filling station in Johnstone was targeted by arsonists last night.

The unoccupied premises at the former Benston Service Station on Beith Road was set alight at around 8.30pm.

The suspects climbed through the roof and set steel containers on fire, which caught onto the building and other materials.

Sergeant Alan Mack who is based at Johnstone Police Station said: "The suspects appear to have gained entry through the roof and steel containers at the premises were set on fire.

"The petrol station has not been used for years however so there was no danger of an explosion.

"There had been tyres left on the site which seem to have caught fire.

"CID have been notified and enquiries are continuing to identify the owner of the property.

"Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious should contact us on 101."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman added: "At 8.28pm on Tuesday, August 8, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire within a derelict building on Beith Road, Johnstone.

"A total of two appliances were immediately mobilised and firefighters extinguished the flames using high powered hoses.
