Dean Milligan, 22, could be locked up after being found guilty of contempt of court during a trip to Paisley Sheriff Court this week. Milligan, who was with two friends, was not due to appear in the dock but ended up with a stint there because of his disrespect towards a sheriff.

He refused to stand up when Sheriff James Spy entered one of the court rooms in the building.

When the sheriff entered the court room a court officer asked everyone to stand up but Milligan remained seated. Despite repeated requests Milligan, of Tay Place, refused to stand up.

He then told the court officer: “I could stand up if I wanted, but I don’t want to.” Sheriff Spy asked a police officer to arrest Milligan and he was taken down to the cells.

He later appeared before Sheriff Spy and was found guilty of contempt of court.

The sheriff called for him to be assessed by social workers ahead of sentencing and adjourned the case until next month. Milligan initially refused to tell the court his full name, date of birth and address.

Sheriff Spy remanded him in custody as he could not grant him bail when he did not know who he was or where he lived.

But Milligan had a change of heart when he returned to the cells and decided to cooperate with the court. After revealing his full name, date of birth and address Sheriff Spy released him on bail. He will learn his fate on May 14.
