Charlene Law, now Hepburn, and Malcolm Hepburn, of Johnstone Castle, made use of the marriage suite within the new £14.5 million facility on Saturday afternoon.

New bride Charlene, 23, was the first person to enquire about the marriage suite — a year before construction had even begun.

She told The Gazette: “My mum and dad had originally got married in the church across the road from the town hall and had their pictures taken at the back square so we wanted something close to that.

“After that I heard about the new town hall opening so I enquired about it straight away. I’ve been watching the building develop for a few years now because I drive past it every day to go to work.” Staff at Johnstone Town hall also called on the services of local Award Winning International Wedding photographer, Graeme Hewitson, to capture Charlene and Malcolm’s big day.

Although other couples have married in the town hall, the Hepburn's were the first to hold their marriage and reception at the facility.

The ceremony suite is just one of the many facilities in the new town hall including Johnstone library, a theatre space, conference space, a coffee shop and meeting spaces.

The building was taken forward by Renfrewshire Council as part of its efforts to help the regeneration of Johnstone.

Around 70 guests attended the town hall wedding on Saturday to watch Charlene and Malcolm’s commitment on their special day, which was held on the same date of their six-year anniversary.

In September 2012, on Charlene’s 21st birthday, the couple were at the Duck Bay Marina restaurant in Loch Lomond when Malcolm got down on one knee.

“I was actually really hungover,” Charlene admitted. “We’d been out for my birthday the night before and Malcolm kept saying to me, ‘you’ve got something in your dress,’ to try and distract me but I kept telling him to leave me alone because I was so hungover.

“Then my family told me to stand up as well and said I had something on my dress also I would at least stand up. When I finally got up that was when I saw Malcolm get down on one knee. I was really shocked but obviously said yes.” Malcolm, 30, who works for Paisley Abattoir, said: “I was very pleased she said yes.” Charlene, who works for Strathclyde Tyres in the town, said she had been watching the town hall building works unfold every day as she drives to work.

Commenting, Charlene said: “It looks lovely and I’m very pleased with the way the town hall looks.” Do you have any special wedding pictures you’d like to share with The Gazette? If so get in touch today by emailing editorial@the-gazette.co.uk or call 0141 435 8856.
