And he described the campaign leading up to the historic referendum as "invigorating".

Mr Alexander said: “I’m proud that Renfrewshire came out to vote No in the referendum. Over 60,000 local people voted to keep Scotland in the UK.

“During the campaign I spoke in village halls, church halls and schools halls right across Renfrewshire, as well as in high streets across the region.

“Over 87 per cent of voters took part in the referendum, which is a tremendous result. It is fantastic that so many local people got involved in this vital decision about Scotland’s future.

“Both the unprecedented turnout and the decisive 10 per cent difference resolves the independence question for a generation at least.

“This has been a truly invigorating campaign. Volunteers from across Renfrewshire have worked tirelessly for over two years for this result. They have spoken to thousands of voters and delivered tens of thousands of leaflets. I would like to thank each and every campaigner for all they have given and the difference they have made. Without their tireless efforts, this achievement simply would not have been possible.

“I have fought in many campaigns here in Renfrewshire, but none was more important than this. It will define our future, and our children’s future.

“I believe our campaign succeeded because we offered what most Scots actually want — more powers for the Scottish Parliament without losing the safety and security of the United Kingdom.”
