Responding to a nomination from Provost Anne Hall, the council’s corporate management team faced the popular challenge together outside their Cotton Street headquarters.

The challenge has raised more than £900 so far, mostly from council employees who were given the chance to ‘douse a director’ if they made an online donation.

Speaking about the nomination last week, Provost Hall said: “I took on the ice bucket challenge myself a couple of weeks ago and I thought it might be fun to nominate all the directors at the council.

“I’m impressed that they went through with it, especially in front of a large crowd.

“We wanted the challenge to raise funds for a local charity and felt that Erskine would be an appropriate and worthwhile cause. The generous level of donations we generated from council staff in a short time shows that a lot of people agreed with us.” The Gazette previously reported how MP Douglas Alexander also had a freezing cold bucket of water tossed over him to raise funds for charity.

Standing outside Paisley Abbey, the hardy politician braced himself for a soaking in aid of motor neurons disease.

Cash has been flooding in for charity since the internet craze went viral on social media sites such as Facebook.

It involves having two or three buckets of water — containing freezing ice cubes — poured over your head, in return for a donation which then allows you to nominate others you would like to see get soaked.

The scaredy-cats who decide against doing the challenge are forced to make a forfeit and donate a larger sum of cash instead.

Martin, chief executive of Renfrewshire Council, said: “When the Provost nominated us all, we knew we’d have to do something a bit different.

“We suspected that a lot of employees would enjoy the chance to tip a bucket of icy water over us all, and so it proved!” “There’s a lot of fantastic fundraising activity happens across the council, led by the Provost whose charity challenges are getting ever more daring, with her wingwalk being the latest one.

“It was nice for the management team to join in and we’re happy to have helped raise funds for such a deserving charity.” A video clip of the challenge is available at www.justgiving.com/CMTIceBucket.
