Dr Iain Hossack, who gained his PhD in Sustainability at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Campus, will present at the Glastonbury Festival’s Speakers’ Forum, Green Futures field for his eighth consecutive year.

The former new music DJ on Scot FM and Paisley’s local radio station Q96 joins a range of notable speakers including The Green Party’s Caroline Lucas and the Eden Project visionary, Chris Smit.

Iain will pose the question: Would it be cheaper, easier and ultimately more sustainable for mankind to leave our planet rather than try and live within it?

The 48-year-old said: “When I first raised the idea to reach for the stars to secure our future, it seemed so farfetched that its main effect was to show how difficult the challenge sustainability is.

“Now, right on our doorsteps, emerges a very real possibility of a Prestwick Spaceport; something to which I have long advocated and now glad to see gaining its rightful credibility”.

Iain is driven to ensure that the sustainability debate stays firmly focussed on sound science.

He believes a risk exists that sustainability could turn into a quasi-religion or a vehicle for other political-agendas.

He feels Glastonbury’s Green Fields share this sentiment by allowing this debate to be continually aired.

He said “I’m ultimately an optimist. We should never forget that we are a wonderfully unique, remarkable and adaptable species”.
