AN award-winning poet from Kilbarchan will be appearing at a historic Scottish event next month.

Jim Carruth, who is current Poet Laureate of Glasgow, will be attending the 177th Royal Highland show on Thursday, June 22, and Friday, June 23.

He was brought up on a family farm in the village and his work is greatly influenced by country life.

Having been a regular visitor to the show, he said he was honoured to be attending as a guest poet this year.

He said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be invited to the Royal Highland Show and feel very privileged to be representing poetry for the first time at the event.

"This is Scotland's iconic event, and it's wonderful that poetry is being acknowledged as a valued addition."

Mr Carruth's first full collection of poems, Killochries, came out two years ago and described the challenges of an ageing shepherd over a year.

It was shortlisted for numerous awards including the Saltire Scottish Poetry Book of the Year.

His most recent collection, Black Cart, was published last month.

Mr Carruth's will be based at various locations on the showground including readings at Cattle Hall and Shearing.

A selection of his poems will be available on the show website.
