INDIANA Jones was given a run for his money as budding historians joined forces to search for lost artefacts during a dig in Inchinnan.

The event was organised by the Inchinnan Historical Interest Group, which promotes culture and heritage in the area.

And around 300 people went along to the open day to enjoy a glimpse into the past.

A medieval coin was among the items found in the trenches at the former Inchinnan Church this week.

The dig has been taking place in Greenock Road, between Inchinnan and Renfrew.

The All Hallows Church, which stood at the site for many years, was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the development of Glasgow Airport.

A number of school pupils have been invited along to the dig and have been encouraged to share their experiences with their parents.

Among the keen historians who have also taken an interest in the project are local councillors Iain Nicholson and Michelle Campbell.

Lynne Black, who co-ordinated the open day, told the Gazette: “We had our group members in attendance too. People were able to talk with our archaeologists and Gilbert Markus, who is our historical consultant.

“It was a great day and we made some very interesting finds.

“Our thanks go to all those who attended, as well as all of our experts and volunteers who helped to make the event such a big success.”

Anyone who missed out on the event will have another chance to check out the dig on September 2, when it features on the Doors Open Day programme.

Members of the Inchinnan Historical Interest Group are also planning a separate event on November 18, with further details to be announced nearer the time.
