Kelburne Hockey Club’s Mens’ First Team sealed the National League 1 title for an incredible 13th successive year after a dramatic final day at Peffermill.

The Paisley club travelled to Edinburgh knowing the destiny of the title was out of their hands with Grange leading the way going into the final matches of the season on Saturday.

Grange faced Western Wildcats at Fettes College two hours before Kelburne took on Edinburgh University.

A Grange win would’ve broken Kelburne’s stranglehold on Scotland’s top division title and rendered their tie against Edinburgh Uni a dead rubber.

But news filtered through of a 3-2 win for Wildcats which handed Kelburne the chance to snatch league glory which they duly took with a 2-0 triumph to win the league by two points.

Two penalty corner strikes by Adam McKenzie and a further open play strike by Roshan Anderson after the break set the seal on a shock result for the Wildcats.

With the pressure fully on Kelburne, their first half was tentative and it was left to a penalty corner strike by Ben Peterson to give the Paisley side a single-goal lead at the interval and still with work to do.

The second half was a mirror of the first, but Kelburne’s retention of the title was confirmed by a cross from Lee Morton that was turned into his own net by an unfortunate Edinburgh defender.

The students had their chances to rescue the game at penalty corners, but a triple save by Kelburne goalkeeper Rory Kerr kept the scoresheet blank.

Kelburne were crowned champions in a sensational turn of events on the final day of the league season. And they have a chance to add to their crowded trophy cabinet as they face Grange in the Scottish Cup final at Glasgow Green on Saturday.
