Habbie Jemma Reekie claimed gold in the Women’s Mile at the Manchester International last Wednesday.

Kilbarchan Amateur Athletics Club member Reekie bided her time and with 250 metres to go made her move to overtake Charlene Thomas and finish first in the field of nine with a strong time of 4:40:55.

The Renfrewshire based athlete has been training alongside with Laura Muir, who recently completed at the World Championships in London, in the build-up to the event at the Regional Arena.

Reekie tweeted that she was ‘buzzing’, in what was her first ever mile win, and said: “That was really good, I’ve grown so much in confidence after the Euros.

“I knew my kick was good so I just held onto the girls and knew I’d finish well. I’m quite happy with the time too, as I thought it was going to be slow after that first lap.’

“I used to run all over the place but I’ve started to run more sensibly and I know I’ve got that kick now.”

The victory caps off a busy few weeks for the 19-year-old, who recently won gold in the 1500m at the European Junior Championships in Italy.

There is no time for a break, however, as Reekie’s preparations now turn to the Scottish Athletics National Senior Championships at Grangemouth on August 26 and 27.

She added: “I might try and chase a quick time. At the Euros I raced three days in a row – I feel like I could go a bit quicker.”
