Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim admits Saturday’s defeat against Maybole was one of the worst results he has experienced at the club.

McKim's team were outgunned by their Ayrshire opponents, who left Keanie Park with a 4-1 victory.

A goal by Ross Robertson in the opening 90 seconds put the visitors in front and they had eased to a 3-0 advantage by midway through the second half, with Steve Wilson and Mick McCann on the scoresheet.

Ally Small pulled one back for the home side with a little over 10 minutes to go as they looked to set up an exciting finish, only for Maybole to immediately restore their three-goal margin.

Expectations are high for Burgh this season after big investment over the summer and McKim knows results need to be better.

He told Gazette Sport: “It’s an unacceptable result for our club.

“I’ve watched it back and the manner of the goals we conceded and the opportunities we missed that gave the opposition encouragement is the most frustrating thing.

“We shouldn’t be losing like that in any game, never mind at home, so it’s a tough one to take.

“I wouldn’t say anyone came away with pass marks. We all need to have a look at what we could have done better, including myself.

“To have that amount of possession and shots and what we have limited them to and come away with that scoreline shows that, in the big moments, we weren’t good enough.

“I’ve been here for a long time now and this is probably one of the worst results, if not the worst, in my time here and it’s one that has hurt the most.

“The sooner this weekend comes, the better because this was a really sore one.”

Burgh created a host of chances against Maybole but failed to capitalise, with McKim challenging his players to be better at both ends of the pitch over the coming weeks and months.

He said: “It was absolutely one-way traffic but that doesn’t matter. In this game, it matters what happens in the boxes and who takes their opportunities.

“We need to sharpen up in front of goal and make sure we defend our own goal better.

"When we do that, the results will come but that needs to happen now and not in a few weeks.”
