JOHNSTONE Burgh assistant manager Eddie McKim admits relegation would be a sad way to bring down the curtain on his time with Johnstone Burgh.

After 12 years as Burgh assistant, McKim’s side dropped to the bottom of the league at the weekend after falling to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of promotion pushers Shettleston.

That result, combined with Glasgow Perthshire’s draw with Bellshill has seen the George Walker’s men slump to the foot of the table.

With McKim and Walker set to vacate the Keanie Park hotseat come May, after spending a combined 90 years in the junior game, McKim admits he would rather it was under very different circumstances.

The former Benburb striker said: “It would be a sad way to go that’s for sure.

“I would love to be leaving the club in a good state for the guys taking over and that was the aim before the season began.

“Unfortunately we just haven’t been able to consolidate our position and that is the disappointing thing. During my time here we have had a number of promotions and our fair share of relegations but it would be nice to leave the club on a solid footing.” After last season’s promotion Walker and McKim could have been forgiven for leaving the club on a high but McKim told Gazette Sport he has no regrets about carrying on for one more season.

He added: “I’ve not really got any regrets about it, we made our decision.

“It wouldn’t have been fair for the two guys who are coming in (David Brolly and Colin Smith) and it just wasn’t the right time for them.

“One of them had only been coaching with us for a season whilst the other has just finished playing so the timing wouldn’t have been great.

“To be fair it couldn’t get a lot worse than sitting bottom of the table but we probably can handle the flack a lot better than them and that comes with experience.” “But hopefully we can avoid finishing bottom and leave the side in a state that the guys can compete no matter what division Burgh find themselves in next season.”
