RELEGATED Johnstone Burgh missed a glorious opportunity to face Premier Division side Clydebank in the next round of the Central League Cup.

Neilston rested a number of players for the tie at Keanie Park, fielding players who haven’t featured regularly this season, including boss Andy Whiteford.

In a tight first half it looked as though the tie could go either away.

However, it was the promotion chasers who took the lead from a well worked set piece.

A late run into the penalty area from Paul Young caught out the Burgh defence and allowed the big centre half to nod home to give his side the advantage.

But, Burgh were by far and away the better team in the second period and got their reward through John McStay, who bundled home after Perry spilled the original free kick.

Burgh were handed a match winning chance with around 10 minutes left on the clock when the hosts were awarded a penalty.

Despite sending the keeper the wrong way Mark McIntyre had to watch on as his spot kick cannoned off of the post and behind for goal kick as the match petered out to penalty kicks.

In the penalty lottery it was Neilston who progressed, 7-6, to set up a tie with the Bankies.

Burgh’s defeat means they will now face already relegated Glasgow Perthshire at Keanie Park tonight (Wednesday).
