COMMUTERS are being warned that speed restrictions could be put in place across Scotland's railway as the country braces for 'torrential downpours'.

ScotRail announced that it will be monitoring the weather over the coming days, as many parts of Scotland are set to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.

It comes after the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms on Sunday, July 20, and Monday, July 21.

The warnings cover Glasgow, North and South Lanarkshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, and East [[Renfrew]]shire.

The rail operator went on to note speed restrictions "may need to be put in place" during this time.

People are being urged to check ScotRail's social media pages for the latest updates.
