Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim has revealed he used comments from the Neilston dressing room to spur his team on to a derby win at the weekend.

Goals from Stuart McCann and Kieran Brophy in the second half earned the hosts all three points at Keanie Park.

Before the match, Neilston boss Kevin Muirhead had said he hoped to take advantage of a “wounded animal” after Burgh suffered a 4-1 defeat against Maybole in their previous league outing.

However, that merely fired up McKim and his players, who could have won more comfortably if they hadn’t passed up a number of good opportunities.

He told Gazette Sport: “We had so many chances and I don’t think the scoreline reflects our dominance of the game.

“I was happy with the performance overall but, in the final third, we need to become a wee bit more ruthless.

“It’s something that will come because we are still getting used to each other and trying different combinations of players. The attacking play is certainly getting better and to keep a clean sheet is a bonus.

“I get on really with Kevin and we have a great relationship but, in a professional manner and wanting to get three points, you use every tool that you can.

“If they tried to have a kick at us on Saturday, then they missed.

“I wasn’t sure about the comments about us being down after we had four wins in five. Everybody has their own perspective on what we are doing but we’ll just continue to focus on ourselves.”

Burgh play their final league match for three weeks this Saturday as they travel to Ashfield before heading into a trio of cup ties across three different competitions.

This weekend’s opponents certainly know where the net is this season, sitting second in the goals scored chart with 24 bagged in just eight games.

McKim reckons his players will need to show the same defensive qualities that were on display against Neilston if they want to take anything from the game.

He added: “We want to put a run of results together and be consistent, so we’re going there aiming for three points.

“To do that, we will need to be at our best because I’ve been watching closely what they are doing and they are well organised, play some good stuff and score a lot of goals.”

Kick-off at Stepford Park is at 2pm.
