Johnstone Burgh manager Jamie McKim praised his players for a job well done after they strolled into the third round of the South Challenge Cup with a 4-0 victory over Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Two goals in each half of Saturday's tie set up a clash with Lowland League side University of Stirling.

Kieran Brophy and Jojo Gillespie netted in the first period, with substitute Ally Small bagging a brace in the final quarter of an hour.

As with any cup tie, progression was the main priority for McKim but he was also left satisfied with the performance at both ends of the park.

He told Gazette Sport: “Every time you come into cup games, the main objective is always just to get into the next round and I’m really pleased with the result and performance.

“We dominated possession in the first half but I felt our decision making was poor at times. We were forcing it when we didn’t have to and tried to counter when it wasn’t on but we polished that up for the second half.

“When the third goes in, you can see their heads go down a wee bit but we really wanted to keep our foot to the floor.

“There was a stage in the first half where it felt like the referee was blowing for a free-kick for them every minute but our goalkeeper and defence stood up to it really well.

"I felt we were comfortable defensively throughout the game."

McKim was also pleased with the impact made by substitute Small.

“The quality we are able to bring off the bench helps a lot," he said. "You are able to freshen things up in key areas.

“It was good for Ally to come on and get a couple of goals. He’s been on the bench the last couple of weeks but, when he came on, he looked really dangerous and did well.”

Cup duty continues for Burgh this weekend as they host Fourth Division outfit Knightswood in the first round of the West of Scotland Cup.

Despite the teams being separated by three divisions and a wealth of resources, McKim insists he won’t be taking anything for granted.

He added: “We’ll show Knightswood the same respect that we show everybody else.

"We want to be at it and pick up another win and another clean sheet.”

Kick-off at Keanie Park on Saturday is at 2pm.
